How Are Mortgage Amounts Calculated?

The amount you can borrow against a mortgage is usually based on your yearly income. Banks and building societies tend to offer 3 to 4.5 times an applicants annual salary, either on your own, or combined, if you're applying with someone else.

For example, if you earn £20000 (per year) a bank or building society is likely to offer you a mortgage of between £60000 and £95000.

In some cases banks and building societies may offer to lend a higher multiple of an applicants yearly salary, depending upon your circumstances.
